(published in the Hobart "Mercury", 1919)
The race of early pioneers is rapidly passing away. There died at Tyenna on Saturday morning, Mr. Robert Marriott, at the age of 69 yrs. He was a native of Tasmania and born in Macquarie St.Hobart.When quite an infant his parents went to the Gold Rush in Victoria. They stayed there for some years. His mother died there and his father came backto Tasmania and resided at Glenora. The deceased drove the mail from Glenora to New Norfolk until the opening of the Derwent Valley Railway. He went to live at Tyenna, where he carried the mail on horseback from Glenora to Tyenna, and when the railway was extended to National Park, he went to National Park for it, and continued to do so until the time of his death. He was married twice. His first wife was Miss Matilda Blanche Fenton who predeceased him 43 years ago. His second wife was a Miss Louisa Busch. He had one daughter (Mrs. Mary Pitfield) and nine sons: Elias, Robert, Charles, Percy, Archie, Frank, Douglas, Kenneth (dec), and Dudley (known as Tom) killed in action. He was for a member of the Old Road Trust for 20 years but when the Local Government was formed he declined to stand for Council. He was for over 40 years in the Government Service and was the mailman between New Norfolk and Maydena. About 35 years ago in the company of Messers Proctor, Ransley, and Fenton, he went into the wild bush beyond Tyenna prospecting.
